The United States has ended its suspension of food donations to the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP), allowing food shipments to resume.
This pause had left 500,000 metric tons of food stuck at sea or in transit, potentially facing spoilage. The halt followed a 90-day review ordered by former President Donald Trump as part of his “America First” policy, which temporarily ceased US food donations despite emergency waivers.
WFP confirmed the lift of the pause, saying it would now continue food purchases and deliveries under existing agreements with USAID. This decision follows criticism and reports highlighting the risks posed to food supplies during the suspension.
Humanitarian groups, especially those involved in programs like the Food for Peace Title II program, expressed concern over the chaos caused by the uncertainty surrounding US foreign aid. These programs provide food aid to impoverished countries like Yemen, Haiti, and Mali.
