Frank Caprio, the Rhode Island judge who gained international recognition through his television series Caught in Providence, has died at the age of 88 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
His passing was confirmed in a message posted to his official Instagram account, which remembered him for his “unwavering belief in the goodness of people” and a legacy defined by “warmth, humour, and kindness.”
Caprio became a household name through viral videos of his courtroom proceedings, where he was often seen handling minor offenses with empathy and levity. His unique approach to justice attracted a massive online following, earning him the title of “the nicest judge in the world.”
His son, David Caprio, thanked supporters for their kind messages and encouraged people to honor his father’s memory by showing kindness to others.
Caprio served for decades as a municipal judge in Providence before transitioning to television. Caught in Providence, produced by Debmar-Mercury, turned real-life court cases into widely viewed content that resonated with audiences across generations. The show received three Daytime Emmy nominations, with Caprio himself earning two nominations in 2024.
Beyond the bench, Caprio became a social media figure. One video of his morning routine — which included brushing his teeth, reviewing his book, and watching clips of his own show — has garnered more than five million views on TikTok. His court became known for moments like inviting children to sit with him or explaining legal matters in simple, relatable terms.
In a 2019 interview, Caprio said the show offered a window into everyday life in Rhode Island and reflected the same challenges many face across the country.
After his cancer diagnosis in 2023, he remained in communication with fans, sharing updates about his health and treatment. One of his final posts mentioned a setback in his recovery and included a request for prayers.
Frank Caprio is survived by his wife of nearly six decades, Joyce, along with five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
