In the final days before handing over the reins to his successor, Joseph Nyumah Boakai, Liberian President George Weah has hinted at stepping away from political power after the anticipated transfer.

Weah, who suffered defeat in the November 2023 presidential run-off against Boakai, acknowledged his upcoming departure during a recent address at his Church Forkaklon Jladeh Family Fellowship in Baptist Seminary.

The former Paris Saint-Germain striker expressed his intention to focus on regional peace initiatives, portraying himself as a global peace icon.

Despite facing protests and challenges during his presidency, Weah gained international praise for gracefully accepting the run-off election results, where he conceded defeat with a narrow margin.

Boakai secured victory with 50.89% against Weah’s 49.11%.

Weah’s decision to leave politics has stirred mixed emotions, with some predicting potential repercussions for the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), the party he founded in 2005, while others commend his commitment to peaceful transitions.
