US Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused South Africa of “anti-Americanism” and announced he would not attend the upcoming G20 summit in Johannesburg.
He reiterated Donald Trump’s claims about the country “expropriating private property,” saying, “South Africa is doing very bad things… My job is to advance America’s national interests, not waste taxpayer money or coddle anti-Americanism.”
This comes after South Africa passed a law allowing land expropriation without compensation in certain cases. The government argues the move is part of addressing historical inequalities, not arbitrary dispossession.
South Africa’s Foreign Minister, Ronald Lamola, responded, stating, “There is no arbitrary dispossession of land/private property.”
The strained relationship between the US and South Africa also stems from South Africa’s neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine war and its involvement in the BRICS bloc.
