Bimbo Akintola Reveals the Pressure Behind Her Support for Tinubu
Nollywood veteran, Bimbo Akintola, has opened up about the intense online pressure that shaped her political stance during the last general election.
In a candid conversation on With Chude, the actress revealed that her open support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was not just a personal choice but also a reaction to the harsh treatment she witnessed and experienced during the campaign season.
Akintola had declared support for Tinubu long before the polls, but she says the hostility from some opposition supporters only strengthened her resolve.
According to her, a single encounter with a bully, someone who attacked her for her political preference, triggered a deeper commitment to stand her ground.
She explained that the turning point came when she watched fellow actress Joke Silva face relentless trolling and dehumanising comments online for the same political choice.
That moment, Akintola said, stirred something in her, compelling her to respond with defiance rather than retreat.
“I supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the last election because somebody annoyed me with their bullying,” she said. “Nigerians can be very annoying. We don’t have to agree, but we must learn to respect each other’s choices.”
She recalled making a video at the time, declaring boldly that she was supporting Tinubu regardless of the backlash. For her, it was less about politics and more about principle—about refusing to let intimidation silence her.
Akintola used the interview to call for a culture shift in how Nigerians engage politically. She stressed that disagreement is normal but bullying should never be part of national discourse.
“We can never all think the same way. That’s what makes life interesting,” she said. “You might still believe he wasn’t the best man for the job, and that’s fine. But at that time, that was my choice, and my voice is mine. Nobody can take it from me.”
Her remarks add a deeper layer to the public conversation about celebrity involvement in politics, highlighting how toxic exchanges online can influence even the most seasoned public figures.
